Troubleshooting Flash Player Problems With Windows XP

There is a solid chance that, at some point or another, you will encounter more than your fair share of errors with Macromedia Flash and Windows XP. Despite the fact that Windows Vista has been on the market for nearly three years, Windows XP remains the operating system of choice for many people and is still the most widely used operating system in the world.
Naturally, with such a large Windows XP install base, problems with Windows XP and Macromedia Flash will occur. This is due to many things, from the sheer diversity of the hardware in each computer, to spyware/malware ruining the fun for anyone whose computer they can infect.
Common Flash Player Problems with Windows XP
It's a guarantee that whatever Flash player error you are experiencing with Windows XP you are not the first and you won't be the last. This means that there is a lot of information that is easily found about what is causing your Flash player problems and what you can do to address them.
However, before we do anything it's important that you perform a fresh install of Flash. This will correct the issues that the majority of people experience without too many hassles. A fresh install of Flash will remove corrupt or missing files that are causing problems, as well as correct any incorrect or incomplete registry entries.
To uninstall and reinstall Flash simply follow the steps below:
- Uninstall Flash via the Adobe uninstall tool - Found here (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html), this tool is the only way to completely remove Macromedia Flash from your system. Choose the version that is appropriate for your operating system, download, and then run the program.
Once the program has run it will have completely removed Flash from your computer. You can verify this by trying to visit any Flash-enabled website.
- Reinstall Flash - Once Flash has been completely uninstalled, reinstall Flash by visiting the Adobe Flash website (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/). Be sure to download the latest version (as of this writing it was version 10).
Once you have uninstalled and reinstalled Flash your errors will likely stop. If they haven't, identify your error below and follow the instructions on how to correct it. Most Flash player problems with XP are pretty simple to fix.
- Some Flash animations/objects will not load - Once you have made sure that it's not the website causing the problems you can then determine the cause of this error. Chances are that it's due to incompatibility among your version of Flash versus the version that the animation/object was programmed for, though there is a small chance that you may have parts of multiple versions of Flash installed, resulting in conflicts.
The solution here is to completely uninstall and then reinstall Flash. This will also uninstall any previous versions of Flash that may be lingering.
- Flash crashes the browser - This is likely caused by a corrupt Flash player installation, though a virus or spyware/malware may cause this as well. Uninstall/reinstall Flash and run a virus/spyware scan of your computer. Ensure that the system scan is as thorough as possible and that every file is scanned. Clean any infections found.
If this error is persisting the version of the browser you are using may not be completely compatible with Flash. Ensure that your browser is the latest version.
- Flash objects take forever to load - This is likely caused by a slow internet connection or a large file size for the Flash object. As well, if your computer is running slowly or performing lots of tasks in the background the speed that Flash takes to load may be affected.
